Special Tanks- Contents will vary, may include flounder. mantis & grass shrimp, toad fish, blue crab, stone crab, calico crab, pin fish, pig fish, sea anemones, sleepers, starfish, sleepers, spider crab (look for sponges/barnacles/anemones on back), and other local marine life. Special needs and separation for safety cause special handling of these species.




























Jetty Tank- Burr Fish- called "puffers", box like, no scales, puff up when stressed, beautiful eyes

Frill Fin Goby- Small, no air bladder, stays on bottom and rocks

Sea Urchin- Looks like a black pin cushion, soft spines, feeds on algae

Sergeant Major- Vertical dark bars with yellow at top, feeds on algae

Spotted Scorpionfish- 3 dark bands on tail, mottled colors, blends with background

Spotted Seatrout- Very popular game fish, lots of spots all over, VGTE

Gray/Mangrove Snapper- Juvenile with yellow fins, dark feeding stripe







Round
Orange Spotted Filefish- 107 types, related to "puffers", sandpaper type skin

Atlantic Spadefish- Two fins on back, angelfish have one fin, black stirpes, near jetties

Giant Hermit Crabs- Very large crabs (up to 8") in conch shells

Bighead Sea Robin- Night feeder, very large pectoral fins, feels for shrimp on bottom














Bay Tank- Red Drum- "red fish" has reddish color, one or more black spots, GTE

Black Drum- dark vertical bars, feelers (barbells) on bottom at front of lower jaw, GTE

Sheepshead- 5-7 dark vertical bars, human-like teeth, GTE

Pigfish- grunts, light silver color, black bars when threatened, used for bait

Hardhead- 6 barbells from chin (like whiskers), toxic irritant in slim, NOT GTE

Eastern Oysters- Young grow on top of older, two shells called valves (bi-valves), GTE

Atlantic Croaker- croak by vibrating fins, silver with brown stripes, bait for sea trout, GTE







Gulf Tank- Red Snapper- red color, mostly off shore, GTE

Lane Snapper- 8 light yellow horizontal stripes, dark spot near below dorsal fin, GTE

Mangrove (Gray) Snapper-grey, bays except winter, fight hard, GTE, dark stripe across eyes

Dog Snapper- Similar to gray snapper, long "canine", no feeding stripe

Rock Hind- Many spots all over, most common grouper, feeds near jetties

Gag Grouper- Mottled grey, half moon stripes, feeds on bottom, large (25 to 80 lbs)

Comb Grouper- Gray with white spots, feeds on small fish by faking illness

Bigeye Fish- Reddish orange, very large eyes & mouth, feeds in deep water

Squirrel fish- orange, large eyes, feed at night, often grunt and click when threatened

Bighead Sea Robin- Night feeder, very large pectoral fins, feels for shrimp on bottom







Sea Grass Tank- Contains various grasses and some small fish that may include seahorses,

pipefish, small minnows, etc







Black Tank- Sting Ray- Flat, smooth skin, long tail, painful barb used for defense

Sea Urchin- Looks like a black pin cushion, soft spines, feeds on algae

Lightening Whelk- Texas state sea shell














Overhead Fish Mobile- Large mobile with many fish, painted by students at Art Center, summer 2009














Shells Displays- Two cases, many shells from local beaches with name tags





















Shells in Sand- Old aluminum boat with sand in bottom, small shells may be keep by visitors














Local Fishing Display- Rods, reels, bait, etc normally used to catch local fish, maps of local area, current fish records, current size and bag limits














Restored Boat- 1950's Elgin boat from Sears, shelves with various displays including model boats














Touch Display- Actual preserved marine life that can be touched and examined, may include turtle hell, dolphin skull, different sea shells, etc

Crayon Transfer Tables- Two tables containing 8 images that may be captured by coloring on paper which transfers colored marine life images to paper





















Free Literature- Free publications providing general nautical information from boating safety to
seafood recipes, many TPWD brochures and magazines













Aquarium Store- Many items to purchase including fuzzy fish, beads, T-shirts, caps, coloring books, water bottles, puzzles, post cards, fish IDs, cook books, etc














Land Crab Tank- Blue Land Crab- Lives in burrows on land, primarily vegetarian














Quarantine Tanks- Tanks for new specimens, isolated for up to two weeks for observation and potential disease treatment














Fish Age Display- Display shows how stones in heads of fish (otoliths) and scales are used to determine age, both have rings similar to trees, add ring each year
